AN APT FILMS PRODUCTION Solomon & Gaenor "A love story with guts and passion" GQ magazine "Moments of intense eroticism stolen in the midst of harsh scenery and family disapproval . . . delightful" The Guardian "Not to be missed . . . a palpable sense of the passion between Solomon and Gaenor, thanks to heartfelt performances from Roberts and Gruffud" "the romance holds firm around and enchanting performance by Roberts whose emotions rang as true as the grim surroundings" "a lyrical, carefully paced and often very beautiful evocation of doomed love . . documentary-maker Paul Morrison's first feature is astonishingly assured . . there is a scrupulous period feel; and the lead performances from Nia Roberts and Ioan Gruffud are sensitively judged"
APT's first feature film, was nominated for an Oscar in 2000. It is a love story set in the Welsh Valleys in 1911. Solomon is a Jewish pedlar, Gaenor a chapel-going coalminer's daughter. The film traces the fear, confusion and excitement of falling in love with someone from another people and another religion - and the hostility their fragile love engenders from their families and communities. An APT production, Solomon and Gaenor was financed by S4C and Film Four with assistance from the Welsh and English Arts Councils, and produced by Sheryl Crown.
